01 Why It Matters

Why Adequate Car Insurance Limits Matter in Utah

We always advise: it is you, and the people in your car, that more often than not benefit from higher limits in the event of an auto accident. Call or click and let us discuss how high limits benefit you most.

A properly built auto policy protects:

  • Your own vehicle
  • Other people's vehicles and property
  • Medical bills you are responsible for
  • Your injuries when the other driver has no coverage
  • Legal defense if you are sued
  • Your savings, your home, your future income

Higher limits often cost far less than people expect. Let us show you the difference.

02 Coverage Explained

The Coverages That Actually Matter

When you read your policy you may wonder what each coverage does and why it is there. Here are the important ones, in plain English.

01

Collision Coverage

Covers your own car when damaged in an accident with another vehicle, a fixed object, a curb, a guard rail or a house.

02

Comprehensive Coverage

Also covers your car, but for everything that is not a collision: theft, a rock that cracks your windshield, hail, or an animal you may hit.

03

Property Damage

Covers damage to other cars and fixed objects, including guard rails or a fence. Did You Know? It costs a few dollars every six months to raise your Property Damage limit from $50,000 to $100,000. Consider even higher limits, a luxury car you may damage can easily be worth over $100,000.

04

Bodily Injury Liability

Pays medical bills along with pain & suffering for anyone you injure in an accident. Did You Know? The passengers in your car can claim against an at-fault driver and benefit from this coverage. Again, it is you and the passengers in your car that most often benefit from high bodily injury limits.

05

Uninsured Motorist

Pays for your medical bills (the driver's and passengers') along with pain & suffering from an accident with an uninsured vehicle. Did You Know? Uninsured Motorist coverage also covers you as a passenger in another vehicle.

06

Underinsured Motorist

Covers your medical bills and pain & suffering when you are in an accident with a driver whose limits are not enough to cover your loss. Did You Know? If you are injured as a pedestrian or on your bicycle, you can file a claim under your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Again, it is you and the passengers in your car that benefit from higher uninsured/underinsured limits.

03 The Real Risk

What Being Underinsured Actually Costs

Utah's state minimum liability limits are $30,000 per person / $65,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage, far lower than what a serious accident costs. When your limits run out, you become responsible for the expenses. These are the costs an at-fault driver can be personally responsible for:

Check My Current Limits
  1. 01 Emergency care and hospital bills
  2. 02 Long-term treatment and rehabilitation
  3. 03 Lost wages you have to reimburse
  4. 04 Legal defense and settlements
  5. 05 The cost of the Porsche or Range Rover you just totaled, over your $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000 property damage limit. (Ask about higher limits.)

Additional Auto Insurance Coverages

Many carriers offer additional coverages you can add to your policy for very little cost. These are the most common:

GAP Insurance

When you buy a new car without a large down payment, you can owe more than it is worth if it is totaled. GAP insurance pays the difference between what the insurance company pays and your loan balance, so you do not have to. If you have equity in your car (you owe less than it is worth), you do not need it, and adding it to your auto policy usually costs far less than buying it from the dealer.

Diminished Value Coverage

When a vehicle has been in an accident and the damage shows on the Carfax, its value typically drops. Diminished Value (DV) coverage helps cover that depreciation. In Utah, companies typically pay 15% of the damage to the car ($10,000 in damage = $1,500 in DV benefit). You must carry collision or comprehensive and claim it on your own auto policy.

Purchase Price Guarantee / New Vehicle Replacement

Purchase Price Guarantee provides the original purchase price of the insured vehicle in the event of a total loss. It normally applies for the first two years you own the car and can only be added when you are the original owner.

OEM Parts Coverage

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts coverage replaces damaged parts with new, original-manufacturer parts. It may be limited depending on the age of your car and your carrier's terms, see your policy or agent for details. It may not apply to glass.

Limited Transportation Network Coverage

If you use your car for Uber, Lyft, Uber Eats, DoorDash or any rideshare or delivery service, contact your agent to discuss the cost and exactly when this coverage does and does not apply, it can get complicated.

$0 Glass Deductible

Many carriers offer full glass coverage so you pay nothing to replace your windshield. While we generally recommend higher deductibles and paying for windshields out of pocket, this can be a nice benefit.

09 More Benefits

Additional Auto Insurance Benefits

Accident Forgiveness

If you are in an at-fault accident, your premium will not go up as a result. Eligibility is based on your driving record, and forgiveness can be immediate or earned after a set period of accident-free driving.

Deductible Credits

Deductible credits are normally $100 for each accident-free year of driving, usually capping at $500. For example, with a $500 deductible and this benefit on your policy, after 5 renewals you would have earned $500 in credit and pay nothing to repair your car.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions Utah drivers ask us most.

Does using an independent agent cost me more?

No. It does not cost you a penny more. We are compensated by the insurance carriers directly, and we work on your behalf, comparing providers, covering your real exposures and making sure there are no hidden gaps in your policy.

How much car insurance do I actually need in Utah?

More than the state minimum, in almost every case. Minimum limits were set a long time ago and medical costs have moved a long way since. If you are found at fault and your limits run out, the rest comes out of your own pocket. We will walk you through what the right limits look like for your situation.

Why did my car insurance rate go up when nothing changed?

Rates move for reasons that have nothing to do with you, carriers refile pricing, repair and medical costs rise, and claim patterns shift across a whole area. That is exactly when comparing pays off: the carrier that was cheapest for you three years ago often is not the cheapest today.

Can I bundle my auto and home insurance?

Yes, and it is usually worth checking. Bundling auto with homeowners often lowers both premiums. Because we work with many carriers, we can compare bundled and separate options side by side and tell you which actually comes out ahead.
