Service Line Coverage – The Hottest Topic Between Plumbers & Utah Insurance Agents

Service Line insurance has been around since about 2018 and it has been one of the best insurance coverages we have seen in Utah. Service Line coverage has saved our clients from plumbing expenses that would have been devastated them. The most memorable claim was when a single mother working at the school district and living in an older home called with a failed sewer line and sewer backup in her home. Service Line coverage was so new she did not even know she had the coverage but it saved her from a $10,000 plumbing bill, she was so grateful. Stories like this make us feel great.

What does Service Line insurance cover? Service Line primarily covers the repair or replacement of the main water or sewer line from your house out to the street. A main water line for a typical home may cost around $3000.00 while replacement of a typical sewer line may cost between $10,000 and $15,000.

What else does Service Line Insurance cover? In addition to the water and sewer lines electrical and gas lines are other examples of lines that may be covered under Service Line Insurance.

Service Line insurance is provided by different companies and often your insurance company will offer this coverage, charge the premium and then pass the coverage through to a third party. These third parties could include Hartford Boilerplate or Home Serve USA. So when you file a claim don’t be surprised if you are assigned a claims adjustor from a different company, its the way it works for now.

Does every insurance company in Utah offer Service Line coverage? No! Check your policy or call your agent. Some companies offer service line with no limitations on age, some companies will reduce the service line benefit if the home is over a certain age and some companies don’t offer Service Line coverage at all. At Anderson Insurance Group we always try and offer and include Service Line coverage but if the company that is best for your homeowners insurance does not offer Service Line you are better off buying it directly from the Dominion Energy/HomeServe USA program.

What is the Dominion Energy/HomeServe USA program? Dominion Energy has partnered with HomeServe USA, one of the largest providers of this coverage as near as we can tell offers the best and most convenient program to purchase Service Line if you cannot add it to your homeowner’s insurance. The link to add this coverage to your Dominion Energy bill is below:

Dominion Energy | HomeServe USA

One could go broke buying all of the coverage that Dominion Energy/HomeServe program offers. We recommend starting with at least Exterior Sewer/Septic Line coverage and Water Line coverage. You may want to consider some of the other coverage including the restoration coverages, that decision is up to you.

What is the criteria for Service Line Coverage? We did have one Service Line claim in Salt Lake City that was not covered because it occurred off of the homeowners property.
The “covered service line” must:
• Be located on the “residence premises”
• Be located underground
• Provide a service to the residence as defined in the endorsement
• Be owned by the insured or the insured must legally be liable for its repair or replacement

What does Service Line insurance cost? When Service Line is added to your homeowner’s insurance the cost can range between $19.00 and $59.00 per year, much less than other programs.

Service Line coverage can have a benefit between $10,000 and $20,000 and most policies have a $500.00 deductible. Check your policy or call your favorite Anderson Insurance Group agent for more information.
